AN Ace hardware store location is shutting its doors.

This location has a long history in the area, serving Southern California for nearly a century.

Hoyt’s Ace Hardware in Rancho Cucamonga, California opened its doors 97 years ago.

The hardware store is located just west of San Bernardino.

Co-owner Frank Nelson said he’s closing his doors on October 20.

“Maybe sooner if I sell enough stuff,” he said to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

The U.S. Sun confirmed that the store is still open, though a worker said they have very little inventory remaining.

What is left is on sale for 60 percent off.

STORIED PAST

While Ace Hardware is a nationwide chain, this location started as an independent store and has served the community since.

S.M. Hoyt, Nelson’s grandfather, founded the store in 1926.

But after years of service, Nelson is retiring the family business.

Because Ace Hardware is a cooperative of semi-independent stores rather than a large retail chain like The Home Depot or Lowes, a retiring owner is all it takes to shut a store.

While Nelson, who is 73, offered his 11,200 square foot business to others in the Ace Hardware network, no one took him up on it.

Residents have praised the hardware store, awarding it a 4.2 rating on Yelp.

“Something feels right about a local hardware store. Like entering a simpler time, almost nostalgic,” one customer said in a review. “Ditch the big box and head over to these helpful folks.”

By the end of the month, the historic store will be history.

WHAT’S LEFT?

Homeowners and other do-it-yourselfers may soon have to travel farther for tools.

Once Hoyt’s closes, the next closest Ace Hardware is in Jurupa Valley, over 16 miles away.

The closest hardware stores to Hoyt’s are a Lowe’s, located just over three miles from Nelson’s store, and a Home Depot, about four miles away.

There is also a True Value hardware store 10 miles away in Fontana, California.

RETAIL SHUTDOWNS

While Hoyt’s is closing due to the owner’s retirement, many other big chains have been shutting down across the country due to low profits.

Many executives have blamed organized retail theft for their shuttered stores.

Target recently announced it would close nine stores across the country, with three of those being located in Portland, Oregon.

Community members raised concerns about creating a so-called food desert there, an area where it is difficult to find affordable groceries.

Cracker Barrel also pulled out of the Portland area earlier this year.
